History

We were renamed in 2016 having been previously known as Welbeck Colliery FC and subsequently Welbeck Welfare FC.
It was decided that following the closure of the local colliery and the subsequent demolition of the iconic Miners’ Welfare that it was time for an identity change to encompass the Three Lions Pub where we now base our after match and hospitality and social events.
The change has also meant that our junior boys and girls teams now have a fulfilling and meaningful identity.
Whilst the change will not guarantee instant success the Club needs to put behind it several lean years results wise , where there had been a revolving door for players and endless managerial changes.
This was far cry from the 1960’s and 1970’s when Welbeck had its heyday whilst competing in various Nottinghamshire based Leagues along with a League in Chesterfield which saw quite a number of honours achieved during that time.
In fact prior to that the Welbeck Boys Club team boasted several players who went on to play professional football for the likes of Nottingham Forest and Mansfield Town.
The present day Club was formed in 1975 which saw an amalgamation of the Welbeck Colts junior section with the (at that time) Welbeck Colliery FC.
But it is wrong to dwell on the past, although that era’s heritage will live long in the memories of the older village inhabitants who not only watched it but also took part in it.
The 2016-17 season is a work in progress project with younger players being given the chance to cut their teeth on Step 7 football. Having achieved FA Charter Standard status in 2000-2001 season – being one of the first Clubs in the country to gain this the Club has grown steadily and our junior section is also on a rebuilding exercise having been hit by teams leaving us to go elsewhere – more often than not this has been due to their egos not matching up to the Club’s constitutional expectations. We can only anticipate what the recent changes will bring but at long last we are undergoing a period of stability which has hopefully left behind the uncertainity and disappointment of the past 5 years or so.
After another tricky start to 2016-17 season there was improvement in the latter weeks of the campaign which saw better results being a reward for the team spirit that was generated leading us to believe that better times are just around the corner. Season 2017-18 still saw us start pretty well but poor results didn’t reward the better performances on the pitch, so we continue to hold onto the hope for improvement in all departments.
